Cuando Luis XIV quiso proteger las fronteras del reino, lanzó un vasto programa de construcción de fortificaciones, proyecto presentado al soberano en forma de maquetas. La primera en construirse fue Dunkerque. El museo, creado en 1943, alberga una treintena del centenar de maquetas que conserva, 260 en total diseñadas entre 1668 y 1870.
